In order to help the visitor navigate around the site, the path of the page being displayed is shown in relation to the structure of the content of the website. This also helps the user to use links to navigate quickly around the site. For example, if you are reading the page about Euro coins in Belgium in the Banknotes and coins section, subsection Design of Euro Coins, the path will be shown as: Home > Banknotes and coins > Design of Euro Coins > Belgium.

In addition, to help the user know where they are, each section has individual colours applied to the following elements: the links on the left sidebar menu, the links in the content area, the main page headings, the icons for unordered lists and the title of tables containing information, as shown in the following image.

The pages of www.bde.es link to the Site map, which is accessed from the Site map link on the horizontal menu at the top of the page. This section provides an overview of the structure of the Banco de España website, and you can use it to go directly to any section of the site.
The main heading of the pages (marked with the tag H1) shows the start of a main area of content, which will then be followed by second and third level subheadings (H2 and H3 tags). The correct use of XHTML tags for the headings helps users who are blind or who have motor disabilities to move around the site content more quickly. For example, users of JAWS can use the combination of keys INSERT + F6 to access the page headings.
Images providing information are accompanied by explanatory texts using the alt tag, which summarises the content for users of screen readers and voice browsers. Images used purely for decorative purposes are inserted using the site's style sheet.
The pages of www.bde.es use relative font sizes so that the user can increase or decrease the text size using the options on their browser. These options are usually available from the View menu, option Text size, or by using the key combination Control (CRTL) + to increase the text size, or Control (CRTL) – to decrease it; alternatively, you can hold down the Control (CTRL) key and simultaneously move the mouse wheel backwards or forwards.
In the event that the text in a link does not give enough information,
titles (title attributes) have been used to give more information about
the destination of the link.
No links open new browser windows without the user first being informed that this is going to happen.
The
icon has been added, which includes the text Link opens in a new browser window in its ALT attributes in order to inform users who use screen readers or voice browsers that a new window will open.

The acronyms and abbreviations used in www.bde.es have been marked semantically in order to describe their meaning the first time they appear in an XHTML page. This will benefit users of non-visual browsers, who will be able to identify each acronym and abbreviation in the document and find the meaning, and users with visual browsers, who will gain contextual information, as can be see in the image.

www.bde.es only uses tables to display tabular data (data tables), and these have scope and id tags in order to enable users with non-visual browsers to associate the table headings with the information in the related rows. In addition titles (caption tags) and content summaries (summary attribute) have also been used to aid comprehension.
