150Th Anniversary of the Banco de España (1856-2006)

On 28 January 2006 the Banco de España celebrated its 150th anniversary under that name. The Bank organised several institutional and cultural initiatives to mark this event of historical importance, one essential for understanding developments in the Spanish Economy from the XIX century until now.

On 27 January a stamp was issued featuring one of the original designs for the new façade of our main building in Madrid.
"Banco de España Building" exhibition (In Spanish only)
Open until the end of March, it showed the different periods of construction of the building through original designs and photographs.
Inauguration of the Marques de Cubas façade (In Spanish only)
On 9 May, the new façade of our main building, designed and executed by the architect Rafael Moneo, was inaugurated.
"Banco de España, 150 years of history" exhibition (In Spanish only)
It opens on 9 May and depict the main economic, financial and historical milestones of the Bank drawing on documents, coins, banknotes, portraits of key Spanish figures and pictures from Bank’s collection.
"Conference on Central Banks in the 21st Century" (by invitation only)
It was held on 8-9 June after the Governing Council meeting.
Virtual Classroom
This new web site was launched in autumn and allows students, educational centres and the general public to understand better the mission of a Central Bank in an enjoyable and instructive way.
Concert
In November, to close the activities of the 150th anniversary, there was a concert for the employees of the Bank in the Madrid Auditorium. The orchestra will played Brahms and Manuel de Falla compositions.
