April 2008

NEW CHAPTER 16. HOUSEHOLDS AND NON-PROFIT INSTITUTIONS SERVING HOUSEHOLDS

This chapter, currently under preparation, will draw together statistics relating to these sectors.

ELIMINATION OF CHAPTER 20. INTERBANK MARKET

Given the integration of financial markets in the Eurosystem, the information on monetary policy operations and on interbank operations involving non-transferable deposits which correspond to or are transacted exclusively between Spanish Monetary Financial Institutions (MFIs) ceased to be relevant some time ago. Accordingly, coinciding with the revision of the publication of statistical data undertaken each year, the Banco de España has decided to discontinue publication of chapter 20 of the Boletín Estadístico. The significant information on Spanish MFIs' claims on or liabilities to other MFIs, distinguishing between Spanish MFIs and MFIs resident in the rest of the euro area, can be found in chapters 4 and 6-8 of the Boletín Estadístico, where the position of these institutions vis-à-vis non-residents can also be seen, with a breakdown by counterpart sector. The claims of MFIs resident in Spain on residents in other euro area countries and on residents in the rest of the world are respectively detailed in tables 8.4. PDF File: Link in a new window, 8.6. PDF File: Link in a new window and 8.12. PDF File: Link in a new window of the Boletín Estadístico, while liabilities to these same groupings can be found in tables 8.8. PDF File: Link in a new window, 8.10. PDF File: Link in a new window and 8.13. PDF File: Link in a new window, respectively. The detailed information for the various agents making up the MFI sector can be found in other tables of the aforementioned chapters.

As regards euro area monetary policy operations, the attendant information can be found both in the statistical appendix of the European Central Bank's Monthly Bulletin and in the Banco de España economic indicator "Consolidated balance sheet of the Eurosystem (A) and Balance sheet of the Banco de España (B). Net lending to credit institutions and its counterparts" (http://www.bde.es/infoest/e0801e.pdf)PDF File: Link in a new window

Finally, the information on interest rates can be found in table 1.15 of the Boletín Estadístico PDF File: Link in a new window, in table 9.1 of the economic indicators (http://www.bde.es/infoest/e0901e.pdf) PDF File: Link in a new window and in the daily information on interest rates (http://www.bde.es/tipos/tipose.htm).

RENUMBERING OF CHAPTERS 16 TO 19

The chapters previously featuring in the March 2008 Boletín Estadístico numbered 16. Balance of Payments and International Investment Position vis-à-vis other euro area residents and the rest of the world, 17. Customs Statistics, 18. Interest rates and 19. Exchange rates and competitiveness indices, will be respectively numbered 17, 18, 19 and 20 as from the April 2008 edition.

CHANGES TO CHAPTER 17. BALANCE OF PAYMENTS AND INTERNATIONAL INVESTMENT POSITION VIS-À-VIS OTHER EURO AREA RESIDENTS AND THE REST OF THE WORLD.

With effect from April 2008, publication of the monthly Spanish balance of payments data is being brought forward by 15 days, so that they will be published two months after the end of the month of reference. The quarterly data will be published three months after the end of the quarter of reference.

At the same time, there will be an increase in the frequency with which the data are revised. Instead of the current practice of revising the data only annually, at year-end, revisions will now be made quarterly and annually. Thus, when the data are published for each new quarter, revised quarterly and monthly data for the immediately preceding quarter will also be published. In addition, when the data for the fourth quarter are published, revised monthly and quarterly series for the previous two years shall also be published.

The new calendar is more consistent with the one for the International Investment Position, the one for the Financial Accounts of the Spanish economy and that of the European Central Bank. This change eliminates inconsistencies between these related statistics.

Simultaneously with the change in the calendar, the tables relating to the Balance of Payments in Chapter 17 of the Boletín Estadístico have been revised and rearranged, and in some cases their periodicity of dissemination has been changed. The attached table details the changes introduced. The rest of the tables of Chapter 17, relating to the International Investment Position, have not been changed. Likewise unchanged are the tables that accompany the monthly press release, and economic indicator 7.2, which is published monthly.
