Reproduction Rules of Pesetas Banknotes and Coins

Prior authorisation from the Banco de España is required to use peseta banknotes or coins, or their images, for advertising purposes. The rules to which these reproductions are subject are contained in Monetary Circular 1/1995 PDF file: Link in a new window (7,81 KB) of 28 February 1995 (BOE 10/3/1995) and apply to all the peseta banknotes and coins that were legal tender in Spain. This Circular describes how authorisation can be requested from:

Banco de España
Departamento de Emisión y Caja
Alcalá 48
28014 Madrid
Teléfono 91 338 63 00
Fax (34) 91 338 68 87

Authorisation applications must enclose a memory describing in detail the pretended reproductions. The content of that memory should, at least, inform about the material, colour, size, printing works, estimated issue, media and distribution scope. Besides, any further relevant data about the application should be included in the memory.

As a general rule the Banco de España will take a decision in a month time, since the application is received in the Banco de España, either in the Registro General or in any of its branches. Should that time pass without any express decision, the application may be taken as granted

The Banco de España grants authorisation if the following two conditions are met:

  • The reproduction consists of either the front or the reverse side of the banknote or coin, but not both
  • The length and width of the reproduction are more than twice or less than half those of the original

Reproductions in books or teaching materials do not require authorisation.
